An Interview with Art Haines, Maine’s New Henry Ford?

    Cont’d from page 5

EVMaine: Battery-powered electric cars are much quieter than internal combustion engine cars. Do you think that the federal or state governments will ever require some sort of audible device be added to electric vehicles so that pedestrians crossing the streets will hear them approaching?

Art Haines: No. The Prius already has that problem, but almost nobody talks about it.

EVMaine: Did you ever think, in your wildest dreams, that you might someday become Maine’s version of Henry Ford, manufacturing a practical and affordable vehicle for the masses to drive?

    Art Haines: No. (laughs)

EVMaine: In conclusion, is there anything else that you would like to say?

Art Haines: Many people object to Low Speed Vehicles because they think that twenty-five miles an hour is just a little too slow. Thirty or thirty-five would be a lot better. I think it’s Montana that just passed a law for "Medium Speed Vehicles" that allows you to drive up to thirty-five miles per hour. I think it’s a good idea to jump up to thirty-five. It’s not a big difference, but it would keep the traffic flowing better.

EVMaine: Well, Art Haines, thank you very much for talking to EVMaine. This has been a most interesting conversation. EVMaine is happy to see that someone in Maine is producing electric kit vehicles so that all those Mainers with a few hand tools will have the opportunity to assemble a very practical and affordable, zero emissions vehicle for around town use that will NEVER require any expensive gasoline. We’ll all be able to breathe a little easier thanks to your efforts. Best of luck in your endeavors. Now lets go for a spin…
