A scene from the GTA Trilogy remaster trailer actually looks worse than the original game

Look, the trailer for the GTA Trilogy remaster looks great. It looks like Rockstar has taken the GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas refresh really seriously, with details, lighting, colors, weather, and additional items and decorations added to the scenes throughout the games. .

The interior of CJ’s house now feels more like a home where people eat, sleep and make their own personal imprint, while the Miami-style beachfront street in Vice City looks even more lively and 80s – We also love the choice of art style from Rockstar and their partner studio Grove Street Games, as it eschewed hyperrealism and retained some of the cartoon style of the original games.

It looks like this will be a great way to pass the time while waiting for GTA 6, so everything looks positive, right? WRONG. There is one particular scene that actually looks worse within about four seconds of appearing onscreen.

The scene in question appears 24 seconds in the new trailer for GTA Trilogy and shows a street lined with casinos dressed in neon lights not so unlike the real world of Las Vegas.

This comes from GTA San Andreas and the Las Venturas area of ​​its sprawling map, giving us a view of a street. As the trailer moves from the original game to the remaster, a car is heading your way.

What jumps out there, unlike all of the other transitions in the trailer, is that the original is actually better than the remaster at first glance.

It’s also the only brightly colored night scene featured in the trailer, with another clip showing a neon-like street, Ocean Drive, similar to Miami in Vice City, captured during the game’s daylight hours.

It leaves me wondering what scenes like this will look like when game time hits night – are we going to see similar blurry visuals and slightly distracting lighting?

This is subjective to the eye of the beholder and if you watch the reflections of the casino lights on the paint of the car as it passes the camera you can tell that the remaster handles some elements better than the original.

This is also just a short trailer uploaded to Twitter – the game has yet to reach anyone’s hands to experience it on its large TVs or high-res PC screens.

There’s a way to go then, but it’s a curious quirk in a trailer that otherwise hits all the right brands. Something just feels a little disabled.

Analysis: why does it look worse?

While the majority of the trailer looks like a great upgrade like I said in my previous post, I agree that the casino strip scene looks weird.

Here is the moment when the merging of the old style with the new technologies available is actually detrimental, in my opinion.

The original game had to hide its graphical limitations, especially in terms of lighting. But as we all know, the flashy lights of a real-world Las Vegas-like scene are what makes such a place so glamorous and attractive.

In the original, the developers charmingly sidestep that – here are riffs of iconic Vegas neon signs, drawn exaggeratedly to catch the eye.

But when the improved lighting effects of the new games are added to the mix, their admittedly more realistic glow actually works to weaken the overall scene.

The quality of the underlying designs is washed out by the added halo of lighting effects. You lose some of the illustrative contrast of the female sign, as the neon elements soften its originally bold, pop-art silhouette.

For the most part, I think what we’ve seen of the visuals from the remastered trilogy does a fantastic job of distinguishing between original artistic intent and the positive possibilities of applying new visual technologies to a scene.

But this photo proves that just throwing new tech on a classic title isn’t always a silver bullet to making something better, and even the most exciting of new tech, whether it’s path reflections rays or high-resolution textures, should be applied with a careful eye to environmental wrapping and site design, as well.
