It’s not often that an award-winning writer and screenwriter decides to direct a TV series adapted from his own beloved novel, but that’s exactly what Niccolò Ammaniti did with it. Anne (set to broadcast on AMC +). Based on his 2015 book, the six-episode series takes a science fiction dystopia-a world where a mysterious disease killed all the adults and turns it into a horrible, confusing and absolutely haunting fable, as you can see in this trailer, debuts exclusively on io9.

Suffice it to say that children are extremely not okay, starting with Anna (Giulia Dragotto), whose mom leaves her with a survival guide. But it’s not at all a book equipped to help Anna navigate the surreal world she must seek to find her kidnapped brother. It’s not just a post-apocalyptic TV series, according to Annecreator, screenwriter and director of. “Anne is both a psychedelic journey, a dark tale, and the powerful coming-of-age story of a girl in which childhood is no longer seen as a station of life, but rather as the enduring condition of all human existence, ”explained Ammaniti. “Anne are things also happening without a grand design? non-judgmental paradigm; and it’s also a strange paradox that calls into question our very relationship to nature, to ourselves, to our demons – only to remind us that all truth is a mystery in itself, and that all that deserves to be saved is the loving embrace of two children. “

Ammaniti focused on nature in particular, as you can see how much she has reclaimed the world from human civilization in the trailer. “Describing a world without adults was a challenge for all departments,” said Ammaniti. “Nature, freed from adults, had to establish itself as the real star of the series. The remains of human civilization, fortunately covered with greenery, are reclaiming its natural space. Through everyone’s cooperation, I believe, a series has been born that looks sunny and bright, but can turn dark and spooky at any time, without warning.

The trailer definitely leans more towards the dark and spooky – little kids emerging from a slimy blue paint, others wear animal masks in poorly lit rooms, but again, it’s fascinating. It’s certainly as good an argument to sign up for AMC + as I’ve seen. With Dragotto as the teenage lead character and 9-year-old Alessandro Pecorella as his kidnapped brother Astor, both making their television debuts, Anne premieres on AMC + on November 18 and will air episodes weekly.
