DC has released a new trailer for the highly anticipated animated film Green Lantern: Beware of my powerhighlighting John Stewart’s origin story.
The trailer chronicles John Stewart’s rise to superherodom and shows the beloved defender of intergalactic peace first gaining his powers. Earth’s newest Green Lantern apparently has to work with a suspicious group of Justice League members, namely Green Arrow, Hawkgirl, Adam Strange, Martian Manhunter, and Vixen, as they attempt to oppose the growing power of Sinestro Corp.
The official synopsis of Beware of my power teases John Stewart’s mission to avenge the Green Lantern Corp. who apparently fell prey to Sinestro’s sinister plans. “In Green Lantern: Beware of my power, recently discharged Marine sniper John Stewart is at a crossroads in his life, only complicated by receiving an alien ring that grants him the powers of Earth’s Green Lantern,” reads the synopsis: “Unfortunately, the ring is not working. come with instructions – but it comes with baggage, like a horde of interplanetary killers bent on eliminating every Green Lantern in the universe. Now, with the help of the light-hearted Green Arrow, Adam Strange and Hawkgirl, this reluctant soldier must journey into the heart of a Rann/Thanagar galactic war and somehow succeed where all the other Green Lanterns failed.”
While Aldis Hodge lends his voice to John Stewart in Beware of my power, the actor may already be familiar to DC Extended Universe fans. Hodge will appear in the next live-action black adam movie like Hawkman and has previously explained the importance of representation in superhero movies. “I remember in my early teens we went into Spawn and Bladeand that was awesome,” Hodge said. “So to know that young kids are going to be able to see that and see an opportunity, and to have an awareness that I didn’t have at a young age of what they can accomplish, it’s really fantastic.”
Speaking of Hodge’s performance in black adam, producer Hiram Garcia praised the actor’s ability to bring both nuance and seriousness to Hawkman. “Aldis [Hodge] is so amazing as Hawkman and just brings weight and energy to this character that if you’re a fan of Hawkman you know his story, that [he] has lived many lives, [bring] a real nuance in the way Aldis plays it which, ultimately, is really intriguing,” Garcia said.
With Aldis Hodge as John Stewart, Jimmi Simpson as Green Arrow, Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter, Brian Bloom as Adam Strange and Jamie Gray Hyder as Hawkgirl, Green Lanter: Beware of my power out on 4K, Blu-ray and digital on July 26.
