The staircase starring Colin Firth released a first trailer ahead of its May air date.
Adapted from the Netflix true-crime documentary series of the same name, this eight-episode series centers on the murder of Kathleen Peterson (alley of nightmaresby Toni Collette) and the ensuing investigation into her husband Michael (Firth).
Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), Dan De Haan (Oppenheimer), Sophie Turner (game of thrones), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Earth), Juliette Binoche (high life) and Parker Posey (Boulevard of disappointment) all fulfill supporting roles.

If you’ve seen the aforementioned Netflix series before, you’ll appreciate Firth’s transformation here – he seems to have really absorbed Peterson’s idiosyncrasies, while Stuhlbarg’s bearded defense attorney David Rudolf is an excellent imitator of the real man.
The staircase director and executive producer Antonio Campos (the devil all the time) said when the project was first announced, “This is a project I’ve been working on in one way or another since 2008.
“It’s been a long and winding road, but it was worth the wait to be able to find partners like HBO Max, Annapurna, co-showrunner Maggie Cohn and the incredible Colin Firth to dramatize such a complex true story.”

When the gripping Peterson case originally landed on Netflix, digital spy sat down with director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, where the Frenchman retrospectively revealed the advice he would give himself before embarking on directing.
“Don’t go. Don’t! Don’t,” he laughed. “You don’t know it’s going to be a long one. It’s going to be a very long journey. Because it’s been a long journey. It’s been an obsession, and also a curse, in a way.
“It was always a very heavy weight on my shoulders. I would always have the case of Michael Peterson, the family, everyone involved, somewhere in my head – and knowing that at some point I would have to come back to Durham to shoot something.
“So yeah, I’m very glad I did, but I don’t want to go back!”
The staircase raw Thursday May 5 on Sky and NOW in the UK, while those in the US can catch it on HBO Max.
