Find out everything we know about Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen expansion so far, including the DLC release date, story, trailers, and gameplay details.
The 2020 Beyond Light expansion introduced the stasis ability, the Deep Stone Crypt Raid, and since then, Season of the Hunt, Season of the Chosen, Season of the Splicer, and Season of the Lost have added even more content.
But now, Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen expansion represents the longest wait between major versions of the Destiny 2 DLC.
Destiny 2 players are eagerly awaiting The Witch Queen – the next major expansion for the Destiny franchise. We’ve put together this guide to cover everything we know about Bungie’s latest Destiny 2 DLC.
Destiny 2 The Witch Queen release date
Destiny 2 The Witch Queen was confirmed in August 2021 to release in February 2022.
This represents a 15-month gap between the release of Beyond Light and The Witch Queen – the longest wait between major DLC content in Destiny 2.
A Bungie blog post from February 25, 2021 explains why The Witch Queen was delayed, citing the global pandemic and other reasons as contributing factors.
Destiny 2 The Story of the Witch Queen
The Witch Queen is part of a huge, continuing story arc that began with Beyond Light. The arc was originally supposed to end with Nightfall, but will instead end with the expansion “The Final Shape” to be released much later.
Much of the fate has been a constant power struggle between light and dark, and these latest expansions are gearing up to finally wrap up this battle.
Not much is known about The Witch Queen, but the developers have promised players will experience a “level of terror that [Fallen] The captains have long felt they are in the cosmodrome ”.
The gameplay of Destiny 2 The Witch Queen
The Beyond Light expansion has shaken up the gameplay formula by adding a new subclass to the game – Stasis. This new item allowed players to launch, throw and unleash powerful ice attacks that could freeze enemies.
With, presumably, new Exotic and Legendary weapons, The Witch Queen is about to make a tweak or two to some of its other subclasses, and Void will be a big part of those changes.
Instead of a whole new subclass like Stasis, a Bungie blog post explained how Void will be reworked to look like a new inclusion.
“In Void, there are three negative status effects that you will apply to enemies:
- Deletion – The target is stunned by any active ability and cannot activate any ability / movement mode while the suppression persists. Afflicted enemy AI fighters cannot fire their weapons.
- Weaken – The target takes increased damage and has its movement slowed. Enemy AI fighters fire their weapons with reduced accuracy.
- Volatile – The target is afflicted with unstable Void energy and will explode on taking additional damage or dying.
And three positive effects that you will apply to yourself and your allies:
- Void Shield – A protective barrier of Void Light that reduces damage taken by fighters.
- Invisibility – You disappear from view and do not appear on enemy radar.
- Devour – You feast on the energy of your enemies. Kills restore health, give pomegranate energy, and prolong devour.
These verbs should all be familiar to veteran players, but now exist in a new, larger systemic framework that will allow us to consistently broadcast their behaviors in-game, whereas previously they mostly existed in their own siled subclasses.
