Edison, New Jersey (April 13, 2022) – A Toll Highway Authority worker was seriously injured when he was hit by a tractor-trailer that swerved into a median on the New Jersey Turnpike on Wednesday, April 13.
The crash happened around 9:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the tollway near Mile 87.9 in Edison.
William Martisch, 55, a Union Beach resident and New Jersey Turnpike worker, was conducting operations in the median between the inner and outer carriageway when a southbound tractor-trailer carrying a shipping container left the floor, hit the guardrail, then hit Martisch and rolled over.
Martisch suffered very serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.
The driver of the truck escaped the accident unscathed.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
New Jersey Truck Accidents
In New Jersey, tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles share the roads every day. However, being involved in a tractor-trailer accident is completely different from a regular car accident. Even a collision with even a small passenger vehicle can result in serious injury or even death. The immense weight and size of a semi-trailer, coupled with untrained or tired drivers, can easily lead to a devastating accident.
It’s understandable that victims assume their insurance company will take care of them, and why wouldn’t they? After all, you’re seriously paying your premiums every month and making sure your end of the bargain is upheld. You thought that if you ever needed financial assistance due to any accident, they would step in and do their job.
Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. It is important to keep in mind that insurance companies are for-profit businesses and it is not in their interest to pay you a lot of money, whether you are entitled to it or not. Their goal is to make a profit and the equation they use to achieve this is simple: collect as much money as possible through premiums and pay as little as possible in claims.
