I was literally about to tear up leaked screenshots, desperate for any info ont Fire Emblem: Three Hopes– which comes out June 24 – when this trailer dropped. And ho, boy, did they really upend our expectations.
While the first trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes gave us a very different idea of how the game would play out, this new trailer certainly changed a few things. You probably have more than a few questions about what’s going on, and I’ve spent some time trying to figure it all out. Let’s go through everything, step by step. Here’s what we know for sure, some possible theories and some wild guesses.
A new protagonist
So while the first trailer led us to believe that the Purple Guy was going to be an antagonist, it turns out that they are actually the player character. Their default name is Shez (which we can change, if we don’t like being called the French word for “house”), and just like Byleth, we can choose between a male or female form.
Shez was apparently a “mercenary lost in the pages of time”, and in this particular case Warriors timeline, they are given a second chance at their destiny. It would seem that, a year before Byleth met the students of Garreg Mach, they were challenged by Shez and probably killed them. But in this timeline, something allows Shez to live on (perhaps the awakening of the God, Arval?), and while seeking revenge with Byleth a year later, Shez meets the House Heads instead. In the events of three hopes, Shez will become a student, and thus the player will engage with their classmates as a student instead of a teacher. I can’t help but hope that Byleth will still become a teacher, if only for how phenomenally awkward this whole situation will be.
Three Hopes, Three Paths
Many hoped that three hopes would provide a “golden ending” to the original story of Three Houses, but instead players will once again have a choice of three routes with unique endings. The names for each route will be Scarlet Blaze, Azure Gleam, and Golden Wildfire. What remains to be seen is whether or not the House leaders will fight each other, as before.
There are a few clues that suggest otherwise. For one thing, as pictured above, Dimitri is lucid enough to fight alongside Claude, which might suggest some sort of alliance. On the other hand, the only Church member we’ve seen so far is Flayn, which may hint that the Church (or, more likely, the Agarthans) are a more unifying enemy this time around. . It will certainly be interesting to see how these routes diverge from the somewhat linear nature of Three Houses, and many are just thrilled to get new Fodlan stories in the first place. In particular, various clues in the trailer indicate that Claude’s story (and Almyran lore in general) is more fleshed out.
The Ashen Demon
Oh man. Byleth. My dear. What have you done?
It’ll probably end up being a red herring, but right now Byleth is being touted as one of the most important villains in this game. It seems like they’re kind of a thorn in Shez’s side, having defeated them before the original events of Three Houses. Now that Shez will take his place as the students’ savior, their exact role in the overall plot remains to be seen.
Many fans theorize that, based on Sothis’ dialogue in the first trailer, this is Byleth’s attempt to travel back in time to reach an end where all three House Heads survive. By placing themselves in an antagonistic position, everyone will be forced to work against them. Personally, I’d hate to see that, since many have grown attached to our stoic teacher, but hey, it would make for a delicious slice of tragedy.
Gameplay-wise, Byleth’s form will be selectable, so they won’t be limited to their female form as some players have been led to believe. But it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to pick a name for them, which doesn’t bode well for the dual protagonist theory.
Friends, new and old
Damn, these new models are stunning! Let’s start with the characters we’ve already met. Companion fire emblem Fan Princess Weekes has covered the new Head of House designs before, but now we’ve got a great look at their tenures, and WOW. Wow! Hubert’s hair is really growing on me, and I’m thrilled to see his signature laugh making a comeback. Dedue really rocks facial hair, but was anything less expected of such a king?
And Hilde. My sweet Hilda. She seems to have taken some fashion advice from Marianne, but with her own Hilda twist, and… I’m speechless how cute she is.
Then there are other characters who will be joining us, like Lorenz, whose new haircut is perhaps his most charming yet (it certainly has the most ergonomic sense between his two previous cuts). And Miss Mercedes is so cute with her long hair. But there were also quick shots that said we’ll also have Ferdinand and Bernadetta, so hopefully eventually we’ll have the full list of original students.
Whether that happens or not, we’re also getting new characters. A man wearing an Almyran outfit and riding a Wyvern could very well be a relative of Claude, while the original Monica (before the Agarthans got her) will be a playable unit. Then there’s a blue-haired brawler who, based on his hue, is most likely Caspar’s father.
But enough about all that, let’s get to the real meat of this topic, which is that we finally get Holst, and oh my god, it’s happening.
I swear to God, if he doesn’t sing a victory song like his little sister, I’m gonna riot.
A mechanical mix
To be removed directly from the Switch store:
Use Fire Emblem strategy to gain the tactical advantage in Warriors-style gameplay. Immerse yourself in real-time battles as you and your army of Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters face off against hundreds of opponents, while using Fire Emblem elements to maximize your strategy. Issue orders to your army amid the chaos of battle to complete missions and objectives. Plan ahead and prepare for battle by equipping weapons, skills, and classes that capitalize on the opponent’s weaknesses. Assign items from Fire Emblem: Three Houseslike coats of arms or battalions, to characters to refine how you plan your approach.
Essentially it will be like before Warriors games, but with a lot of feedback Three Houses mechanical. It’s not just limited to combat: as seen above, we’ll also be able to canoe with our boos, through the back dining room mechanic and various training sessions. It’s unclear whether or not we’ll be able to actually romanticize these boos, but buyers of the digital copy of the game will receive a surplus of Owl Feather freebies, which are universally enjoyed by all characters. Support systems are therefore likely to be more complex than in a standard Warriors title, at the very least.
thoughts and speculations
There’s definitely a lot to unpack here, so let’s hear your thoughts! What do you think of our new protagonist? Are you a fan of purple hair and orange yarn, or does their look leave a lot to be desired? What about the cast? And, more importantly, what do you think will happen plot-wise?
