Honor Among Thieves trailer delivered on Magic and Monsters

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves trailer gave RPG fans a lot, including the film’s two big must-haves.

Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves released the first live-action story trailer based on the years-long tradition of tabletop role-playing Dungeons & Dragons. The TTRPG has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to the many live game shows: players record and broadcast their adventures through a series of podcasts or vodcasts. And the swollen desire for more D&D content has finally made its way to the big screen in a new and more modern way.

Well anchored in a high fantasy universe, the trailer for Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves presented a wide range of D&D iconic pillars. From monsters to magic shown, TTRPG players everywhere could point to visual depictions of the spells and beasts that have filled the imaginations of the masses for many years now. And to top it off, various dungeons and a few dragons.

The honor among thieves The trailer showed off the expansive locations the cast and crew shot in for this film and, as expected, showed fans some of the dungeons the party will explore. Focusing on the trials going from room to room in a trapped dungeon is a big part of what builds the bonds of a good party. A big part of D&D is based on the exploration of a magical new world and the story that comes from one party uncovering secrets. As such, the locations in this film will have plenty of audience members watching intently and taking notes for their next dungeon crawl.

And filling these dungeons are the many monsters of the D&D universe, and it seems Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves will be full of big names from D&D traditions. From the panther-like beast of displacement to an argument-provoking owl, the film pitted the heroes against an army of enemies in more ways than one. It looks like the BBEG (Big Bad Villain) will be some sort of cult or maybe even an army of the undead that the heroes seemed to have helped in the past and now must right their wrongs against powerful magic users. And throughout it all, someone irritated a dragon or two.

The namesake and quite possibly the game’s biggest draw, the honor among thieves the trailer puts three dragons in full screen. Starting with a black dragon that spits acid rather than fire, fans are already thrilled with the variety of dragon types and designs. Altogether, the film delivered the bare minimum and more for fans of the game and a new audience looking for good times at the movies.

With dozens of fans seeking to criticize and denigrate the film for various reasons, this trailer surely quenched some preconceived outrage and sparked new rage for one detail or another. But if there’s one thing the movie knows it got right, it’s that it included both dragons and dungeons. The beautifully chaotic and wild in-store ride with Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves captures the vibe and feel of some of the funniest tabletop moments in a home campaign.

To see some dungeons and dragons, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opens in theaters on March 3, 2023.
