New pig transport trailer design guidelines expected to improve cleanability, safety and animal welfare

New pig transport trailer design guidelines being developed by the Prairie Swine Center are expected to help improve the cleanability, safety and animal welfare aspects of the equipment used to transport pigs.

As part of a multidisciplinary research effort undertaken in partnership with Swine Innovation Pork to reduce costs and expedite the washing and disinfection of pig transport trailers, the Prairie Swine Center is developing new design guidelines for transporting pig trailers. pigs.

Dr. Bernardo Predicala, an engineering researcher at the Prairie Swine Center, explains that there are three main types of trailers in service, two-deck flat-bellied trailers, straight-deck trailers that can have two to four decks, and trailers. hydraulic lift, but there are several models. and configurations.

So far we have developed the Design Criteria which lists the different features or specifications they should look for in terms of cleanability, safety and animal welfare and we are currently in the process of validating these design criteria. So far we have inspected six trailers representing pot belly, straight platform trailers and we have also been able to inspect hydraulically lifted trailers and we are looking to inspect more trailers to validate the design criteria. Based on the results of this validation step, we refine the design criteria checklist.

We are in the process of developing an electronic application that will facilitate the implementation of the validated design criteria. After that we will continue to develop a scale which will be calculated in the app to allow us to see if a particular trailer design will be rated as high or low in terms of cleanability, safety and animal welfare.

Dr Predicala expects pig producers and truckers who regularly transport pigs, trailer manufacturers, inspectors and regulators to be the primary users of the information generated by this project.
