Fans got a glimpse of the latest Thor: Love and Thunder movie, and it signals the end of the road for our favorite Asgardian god.
Is this the thunder god’s last dance?
Looks like it’s in the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunderwhich teases the titular Avenger (Chris Hemsworth) retiring after his universe saving and carbon-charging events from End of Game.
And it looks like a familiar face is coming back to take over as the hero.
“These hands were once used for battle, now they’re just humble tools for peace,” Thor says after showing over the years that he’s changed from a boy to a man. “I need to know exactly who I am.”
Instead of more epic battles for the Asgardians, he appears the fourth Thor will focus on the shattered god finding himself again – while traveling through space with the Guardians of the Galaxy as Sweet Child O Mine of Guns N’ Roses plays.
“I will choose my own path. Living in the Moment. My days as a superhero are over,” he says as he walks away from the Guardians as they prepare to fight an unseen enemy.
Later, as Thor seems lost in his own head, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) relays this advice to the confused being of power.
“Remember what I told you, if you ever feel lost, just look into the eyes of the people you love… Not me!” Star-Lord says as Thor enjoys looking him in the eye. “What? I’m just listening,” Thor replies awkwardly.
Fans parted ways for the last time with a heavy, booze-heavy Thor emotionally devastated by the presumed death of Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the known deaths of his parents, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and his. failure to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Infinity War.
He leaves the colony of New Asgard in Tønsberg, Norway under the rule of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and embarks on a mysterious interstellar adventure with the Guardians.
She seems to be running the show very well these days as an elegantly dressed Valkyrie is shown in a meeting room with other world leaders in the new trailer.
Elsewhere in the universe, Thor is seen losing weight doing a workout with metal chains while wearing a trucker hat that reads “strongest avenger” and a tank top as he meets a lover blue-haired apparent who plants a huge kiss on the retired Avenger.
The trailer also teases Russell Crowe’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Zeus, who is seen holding a lightning bolt – most likely in the realm of Olympus.
Living rock figure Korg, voiced by director Taika Waititi, also makes an appearance in one of the many worlds the introspective god appears to visit.
But there’s a bigger cameo in the closing seconds that’s sure to delight fans of this trailer.
Thor’s “old flame” of earthly girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) seems to have taken back her seemingly open mantle as she’s seen wielding the magic hammer Mjolnir while wearing a winged helmet in battle.
Now worthy of leading Asgard, Foster returns to the franchise after being absent from Ragnarok on the grounds of having “dumped” Thor, which he claims was mutual.
The surprise twist reflects a callback to that film when Thor fought the Lost Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) on the planet Sakaar. It also resembles the moment Captain America (Chris Evans) unexpectedly summoned the weapon in End of Game.
Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in Australia on July 7.
