Peter Hengl’s Horror Looks At Body Insecurity And Emotional Manipulation [Tribeca Exclusive]

Family is tough, but it can be even worse when you’re a teenager going through tough cycles of body insecurity and weight issues. It’s basically the premise of “family dinner», a horror thriller from Austrian writer-director Peter Hegl, made its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival next week (technically now known as Tribeca Party, but old habits die hard). The film, Hengl’s feature debut as a director, delves into the compiled nature of family, tense family dynamics, emotional manipulation, how the world sees us and how we see ourselves, often with disgust to self when it comes to weight issues. .

The film stars the newcomer Nina Katlein like the young girl Simi. Overweight and insecure, Simi spends the Easter weekend with her famous nutritionist aunt. The hope is that it will help her regain better health, but as the aunt’s frosty family dynamics and an increasingly malevolent atmosphere leave Simi feeling uneasy, the weight isn’t the only something she is about to lose.

Here’s the synopsis for the film via Tribeca:

Tired of feeling depressed about her weight, Simi, 15 and older, visits her aunt Claudia for the Easter weekend. Claudia is a popular nutritionist who has written best-selling health books, so for Simi, spending a few days together could help change her diet and inspire her to lose weight. What should have been a great family vacation weekend, however, quickly turns out to be anything but. Simi’s cousin, Filipp, is oddly hostile towards her, while Filipp’s stepfather, Stefan, is oddly the opposite towards Simi, while Claudia’s dietary advice is about to get too militant. What makes everyone act so weird and aggressive? The answers are even worse than Simi’s worst nightmares.

Alongside Katlein, the physiological horror thriller also stars Pia Hierzegger, Alexander Sladek, and Michael Rose. With Tribeca around the corner, we’re thrilled to release the film’s exclusive trailer and poster, which you can check out below.
