Pixar’s Lightyear is heading to theaters after all

This year’s Oscars have gone on to infinity and beyond with a new trailer for Disney•Pixar’s “Lightyear.” And, true to the celebration of cinema, it’s confirmed that, unlike Pixar’s “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red,” this next movie will head to theaters and IMAX.

Chris Evans, the voice of new Buzz Lightyear (sorry Tim Allen), introduced the new music video for “Lightyear,” which wasn’t all that different from previously released promotional material, though there were a few new shots (not that we cataloged each shot forensically, because that would be super weird, right?)

Even bigger than the new footage is the news that “Lightyear” will be heading to theaters, including large-format IMAX theaters. It will be the first Pixar animated feature to have a wide theatrical release since “Onward” was released in the spring of 2020 just days before the pandemic shut everything down.

There have been various reports that Pixar animators were disappointed with their relegation to the Disney+ Original Movies, despite being hugely popular – ‘Soul’ won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature last year and “Turning Red,” released earlier in March, set records on Disney+.

Still, it stood to reason that “Lightyear,” which is part of the “Toy Story” franchise and carries with it the colossal weight and expectation (and supersized merchandise potential) that comes with it, would be a company exclusive to the theater. It was far from a sure thing, however, it’s good to know it will hit theaters – and IMAX too!

“Lightyear” stars Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Josh Brolin (as Zurg!), Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba and Taika Waititi, uncovers the famed space ranger’s origins, and is designed as a hard-hitting sci-fi show , directed by Pixar stalwart Angus MacLane.

It hits theaters and IMAX on June 17.
