Hulu and 20th Century Studios have released the official trailer for Princess on June 2, 2022. The trailer begins with voice-over narration to a classic tune. We are told of a magical castle where the king’s daughter has been locked in a tower, and we meet the chained princess (Joey King). We are then shown the angry prince (Dominic Cooper) confronting the king. The prince remembers a promise the king had made to him; that he would hand over the princess to him in marriage. And it looks like that promise has almost been kept. The princess is seen walking down the aisle with her father who hands her to the prince. But, just as the prince is about to put a ring on her finger, she runs away. The princess declares that she is not a property to be traded, but of course those around her still try to treat her as such, not knowing that they are playing with the wrong princess.

The classic tune switches to Joan Jett and the Black Hearts‘ hit, ‘Bad Reputation,’ and we see the princess’ badass side. Still dressed in her wedding dress, she fights men armed to the teeth and like the badass princess that she is, she is victorious. We see that this princess will do anything to get her freedom and save her family and if that means running up walls or setting a soldier on fire then so be it.

Along the way, she encounters an ally who helps prepare her and fights her enemies alongside her. The image of the princess running with a sword and fending off anyone who gets in her way is not the one we commonly see and even the prince remarks that it’s “not exactly female behavior”, but this princess doesn’t care what you consider feminine behavior and will jump many floors with a guard to claim victory. She won’t stop until she holds the prince’s beating heart.

The trailer shows us that this princess isn’t like we’ve seen her before, and she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty to protect her freedom.

What is the princess talking about?

The official synopsis of Princess by 20th Century Studios reads as follows:

With her vindictive and despised suitor out to seize her father’s throne, the princess must protect her family and save her kingdom.
