Revel in the visual splendor of Netflix’s final trailer for The Sandman

For decades, Neil Gaiman The sand man was one of those classic graphic novel/fantasy properties that most Hollywood producers considered to be in the “unsuitable” camp. The story is just too sprawling, weird and ambitious, and The Dreaming’s fantasy setting demands a visual approach unlike anything typically seen on the small screen. But at a time when CGI has reached such a level that today, the temptation to finally visualize the world of Dream of the Endless, the dream shaper, becomes impossible to resist. Morpheus himself is the patron of artists, and his power over the dream extends to those who bring their dreams to life on film. So I hope that this new Netflix series, which will premiere on August 5, 2022, will have his blessing.

The final trailer, which you can see below, indicates at least more than any previous ones the depths of visual splendor we can expect from this big-budget adaptation of Gaiman’s work. This time around, we get a much closer look at its cast of iconic comic book characters, from the rogue nightmare on the loose known as The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), to Gwendoline Christie taking on the meaty role of Lucifer, the ruler of hell. And yes, if you’re wondering, that’s the same DC Lucifer who ends up starring in the FOX series of the same name, although Christie’s is obviously a different take on the same character, who was created by Gaiman for The sand man. More than anything, however, this trailer seems to have the drama right. ballast for the series, capturing Dream’s ominous and disturbing presence. And that’s one of the most important things that any adaptation of The sand man would need to do well.

At this point, we can’t wait to dive into the series and its hugely impressive ensemble cast. About 10 more days—The sand man hits Netflix with its first season on August 5, 2022. Check out the trailer below.
