It’s been more than 15 years since Richard Linklater made an animated film. In the early and mid-2000s, he added rotoscoping — where you draw over film frames to create an animated/live-action hybrid — to his bag of cinematic tricks. His waking life and A dark scanner both became acclaimed arthouse hits. Then he returned to live action and stayed there for over a decade.
Finally, he’s back with a new animated feature, and this one seems to be one of Linklater’s most autobiographical films to date. It’s called Apollo 10 1/2: A Childhood in the Space Age and he draws on Linklater’s own memories of growing up amid the moon race for a whimsical story that involves the moon landing and hippies. APOLLO 10 ½: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD tells the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two intertwined perspectives – the astronaut and mission control’s view of the triumphant moment, and through the eyes of a kid growing up in Houston, Texas who has his own intergalactic dreams. Drawing inspiration from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater’s own life, APOLLO 10 ½: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD is a snapshot of American life in the 1960s that is part adult, part societal commentary and part out of this world. world. adventure.
And here is Linklater’s commentary on the film, via the official press release:
After years of working on Apollo 10 1/2, I think everyone involved is excited to take people on these intertwined journeys – a journey of a young astronaut to the moon, and another that goes hand in hand with him and his family in the suburbs near NASA. I wanted it to be several things at once: a recreation, a fantasy and a memoir of ephemera, and doing much of the film in those last two dark and unsettling years has only sharpened our focus on what was mainly trying to share in this story, namely the hope, optimism, community spirit and creativity of that time.
Apollo 10 1/2: A Childhood in the Space Age premieres on Netflix on April 1.
