The setting of “Rollerdrome” opens up interesting game options. Featuring a protagonist on rollerblades with a gun, the title seems to channel elements of games like “Superhot” and “My Friend Pedro” for gunplay, while the movement and traversal is more like “Jet Radio set”. In the trailer, the protagonist speeds through arenas, grinds rails, and leaps off ramps, all while lining up shots with the title’s equivalent of bullet time.
A PlayStation Blog post accompanied the reveal, offering a bit more information on what players will be getting into. According to writer Jimmy Tyssen Smith, developer Roll7 built “Rollerdrome” with the constant movement of players in mind. With the various enemies in the arena outnumbering the player, the stoppage could spell disaster for the suit-wearing protagonist. To be successful, players must maintain their speed and tactfully use Super Reflex mode – a short slow-motion burst – which not only helps line up tricky shots, but also adds a 1.5x damage modifier.
Along with all the fast-paced action, there are several moments in the trailer where the character does some nice flips and spins to complete the roller derby carnage. It’s not just for show, as players will be rated on their performance in “Rollerdrome”. On top of that, ammo is limited and mostly picked up by picking up some cool stuff. The more impressive the trick, the more ammo you receive.
