The trailer for Rowan Atkinson’s new Netflix series Man versus bee was released online, and you can watch it above! The series comes with a very simple premise, which lives up to its title: a man goes to war with a bee in his house, and things end up spiraling very out of control – in classic Rowan Atkinson fashion. The Mr. Bean and Johnny English actor hasn’t lost a step, even when playing against a CGI drone. In fact, Atkinson pretty much made the perfect series for the COVID era…
Synopsis: “Goofy dad Trevor tries to make the most of a cunning bee while keeping a posh mansion – but only sparks more mayhem in this comedy series.”
Man versus bee has ten episodes planned for its season; it’ll have to be a well-paced escalation of comedic absurdity, as the basic premise of a man trying to kill a bee feels a little thin to carry ten full episodes. Obviously, there will be more to Trevor’s life and circumstances that will be drawn into the conflict he has with the bee – the trailer already alludes to that as much, right from the start.
The trailer opens with Trevor in court to answer for all the chaos and destruction that will unfold, as the bee fight moves out of the house into the surrounding community. A sizzling footage reel shows action sequences like a car chase; Trevor burns the house down with a flamethrower; and all manner of physical comedy slapstick. So, given a good job of editing, there is no doubt that Man versus bee could fill ten episodes, as each episode sees Trevor pull off a single Wile E. Coyote-style scheme to get the bee, only to fail and fail again. Escalating that frustration (plus outward aggravation) could eventually (and hilariously) push Trevor to the point of Joker-like psychosis.
Rowan Atkinson looks like he’s having fun in this new series, which is a really good thing. Atkinson was shameless in his fatigue playing Mr. Bean. As the actor told the UK’s Radio Times, “I don’t like playing with him very much. The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting, and I can’t wait to end it.”
Atkinson will also appear in the upcoming prequel film Wonkawith Timothée Chalamet.
Man versus bee will begin streaming on Netflix on June 24.
