Sennebogen hybrid material handler helps Trailer SpA

Trailer SpA has found steel handling at its rail terminal more efficient, safer and much easier since the arrival of the new Sennebogen 865 E Series hybrid material handler. The material handler, equipped with an electromagnetic lifter capable of handling 15,500 lb (7,000 kg) steel items, has taken Trailer SpA to new heights.

The success of Trailer SpA began in 1953, in northern Italy. The company started with cargo haulers and a single retired US military truck. It has transformed into a modern logistics service provider with a large fleet of vehicles, specializing in the intermodal transport of steel products.

In 2021, Trailer SpA started its activities in a five-track railway terminal. They inherited existing machinery, including aging crawler cranes and heavy forklifts that needed to be replaced. Their old equipment impacted productivity goals and led to safety issues and concerns. Together with the dealer Sennebogen, the company has found the perfect solution for the safe and efficient handling of semi-finished steel products.

After weighing its options, Trailer SpA chose a Sennebogen 865 E Series hybrid material handler. It was built specifically for multiple applications such as heavy duty port applications as well as steel handling. The reach of their Sennebogen 865 E is 60 feet (18 m) and uses an electromagnetic lifting beam. With its lifting capabilities, the 865 E easily moves steel, including steel beams and metal rods, weighing approximately 15,500 lbs (7,000 kg). Before the arrival of the 865 E, these steel products had to be secured by a complicated procedure of chains and straps when lifted by a crane. However, now equipped with a magnet, it eliminates the need to secure the load during the handling process. Not only does this save huge amounts of labor and time, but it also makes the daily work routine much safer for operators and those in the field.

Another highlight of the 865 E is the integrated scale. This allows the operator to check the weight of the load. From inside the cab, the operator receives instructions from the control center on how freight should be organized when loading onto trucks or railcars. And thanks to the integration of the scale into the internal computer systems of Trailer SpA, the operator receives direct feedback on the correct loading of the transport vehicle. Another advantage is that the required transport documents are already prepared in the background and generated in real time to keep things moving.

Hybrid material handler reduces fuel consumption by up to 50%

The Sennebogen 865 E series uses green hybrid energy harvesting technology. This technology can reduce energy consumption by up to 50%. Hybrid means that in addition to a fuel-efficient 355 hp (261 kW) Tier IV diesel engine, a second component is fitted to support engine performance. A separate hydraulic circuit is used, consisting of a third hydraulic cylinder between the two lift cylinders with piston accumulators at the rear of the machine. When the boom is lowered, the accumulators store energy from the down stroke until the next working stroke. Just like a spring that relaxes, when the boom is raised, it requires no additional energy. The cycle uses temporarily stored energy to complete the lift.

“For us, this machine is a symbol of the company’s modernization,” says Gabriel Hutu, operations manager at Trailer SpA. “It changes the way we think and work, increases operational safety and reduces the environmental impact of our processes. great lifting capacity, even at maximum reach we can transfer loads of almost 8 tonnes on average from truck to wagon or vice versa – extremely fast and fuel efficient too.”
