The latest trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” dropped this week with great fanfare, giving us yet another look at the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which promises to be a doozy.
But the trailer is a clear sign that there is more to come and a lot of content that Marvel and Sony have chosen not to show.
Let’s talk about the trailer first. It starts with a sad-looking Peter Parker pondering his life, wondering if he made the right decision in becoming Spider-Man. So he asks Doctor Strange for help, who uses a spell so the world never knew Parker was Spider-Man.
From there, Doctor Strange explains that the universe has seen a number of visitors from outside their universe. Look out for the footage of the Green Goblin and Doctor Otto Octavius, who arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We’re soon thrown into a messy mix of clips where Spider-Man – seen in a black suit at one point – confronts Doctor Strange about what’s going on. We see MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) talking with Doctor Strange and joking with Doctor Ock. Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) runs with a vial in her hand. This is your typical trailer scene.
We then see more bad guys. Sandman, Lizard, and Electro all make history, taking on Spider-Man head-on. The trailer, over and over again, pushes the bad guys right in our faces. We’re bound to see these historic Spider-Man foes take on Peter Parker with bloodthirsty revenge.
It’s all well and good. There could be so much going on in this movie that any other content could mess us up. But it’s clear from the trailer that there’s more to come. As in, we don’t even know who the heroes are or who the big bad is yet.
Other than a few shots, we barely see Spider-Man taking on the villains from the movie. We barely have any initial action scenes in the trailer. Usually you would expect to see a photo of Spider-Man hitting the lizard. But instead, we get Spider-Man jumping through hoops and taking on Doctor Strange. And we don’t yet know who unites the bad guys.
If you need another clue, just watch the final moment of the trailer. Doctor Strange says, “They’re starting to pass and I can’t stop them.”
Who are they? Who passed ? A trailer that ends with a cliffhanger suggests that there is indeed more to come for this film.
If you’ve been following the rumor mill then you know there’s probably a lot more to come. I will not discuss it here in order to avoid spoilers. But just be aware that it might not be some of the older Spider-Man villains that make an appearance in this movie.
So, Spider-Man fans, have a seat. You might see the trailer as a mess without a firm explanation of the plot. It would be shocking if we didn’t get one more teaser on what to expect in this new MCU movie.
