Did you really think that Shrek franchise was done for good? 11 years after the last entry in the series, everyone’s favorite Zorro-cosplay cat is back for Puss in Boots: The Last Wishthe in-development sequel to the character’s first solo film released in 2011. Ahead of the release of the film’s first trailer next week, DreamWorks has shared a brief teaser that heralds the return of Antonio Banderas’ shoe-wearing feline.
Animation studio Tweet-released the 10-second promo for Puss in Boots 2, which goes ahead and kills its main character. No, really, I’m not kidding. Find out via the tweet below.
“Cats have 9 lives, right?” reads the caption. “What is the worst that can happen? In 8 days, discover the [Puss in Boots: The Last Wish] trailer.”
Of course, a bell falling on his head won’t hold Puss down for good, but the teaser caption confirms that this unfortunate accident will cost Puss one of his nine lives. Which is a part of the character’s lore that has never been mentioned before in any other Shrek movie, but whatever. According to the film’s synopsis, the last wish will see Puss realizing that his passion for adventure has taken its toll, as he has burned eight of his lives and has only one left. To save himself, Puss embarks on an epic adventure to find the mythical Last Wish so he can restore all nine.
A beloved and lovable character grappling with the reality of his own mortality? It looks like fun for the whole family. Not much beyond that connecting line and Banderas’ involvement has yet to be revealed, although it seems Puss’ design and overall animation style had something of a redesign, going through this tease.
Co-directed by The Croods: A New Eraby Joe Crawford alongside Mark Swift, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is scheduled for September 23, 2022.
