The Mehrzeller trailer, the dream mobile home for those who have everything

To this day, it remains one of the most visually striking RVs created and a very bold project overall. Its aim was to combine the best of both worlds in a single product: luxury amenities and the possibility of customization, with an affordable price range and mass appeal. The Mehrzeller was presented as a concept in early 2008 and as a prototype later that year at the Caravan-Salon in Düsseldorf, the largest event of its kind in Europe. Over the next two years, it would regularly make headlines, with the designers behind it insisting it was intended for production. In 2009, an online configurator was put online, further confirming their request.

As the spring 2010 delivery date came and went, it became clear that the Mehrzeller would never see the light of day. It’s a shame too, as it promised that ever-elusive unicorn of the perfect motorhome, a unique solution to the travel dreams of every traveler, including the rich one who won’t jostle him on the road, without the creature comforts of home. .

The Mehrzeller, which means “multicellular” in German, started as a thesis project of two designers from Granz University of Technology in Austria, Christian Freissling and Theresa Kalteis, and then came out as part of the agency’s portfolio of Nonstandard design. Under the guidance of Professor Peter Schreibmayer, the duo reflected on “Mobile life solutions” and, with the backing of companies like BMW, Waeco, Alphatronics, Alugas, Jokon, Fiamma, Cleversolar, Simona, Moralt and Reimo, they came up with something unlike any other trailer on the market.

The Mehrzeller, as you can see in the gallery photos above, had a honeycomb structure, with multiple facets protruding in any direction. It was pristine white inside and out, too, and those two things probably had less to do with functionality than aesthetics. Simply put, the Mehrzeller was A sight. It might not have been a very efficient trailer on the road, if it had been put into production as expected, but by Jove it looked striking!

However, the Mehrzeller’s main selling point was that it was fully customizable while still being affordable. To do this, the designer duo has relied on the principle of mass customization, which offers a limited set of customization options to allow the same manufacturing costs as with mass production. The many combinations of these options mean that buyers will still be able to make the product their own, even if it is not a unique product.

For this purpose, the Mehrzeller got an online configurator, where potential buyers could enter their information. They had to decide how many people they wanted their camper to sleep in, what their favorite activities were, and where they were most likely to spend most of their time. Color and fabric options and additional additions have also been listed.

A 3D rendering was made based on the final selection, with the price calculated at this stage; the project would then pass to in-house designers. By the time the project was presented to the public, a base price of $ 65,000 was circulated in the media, although it’s fair to say that this was only an estimate.

The prototype brought to the Caravan-Salon was less spectacular than the digital concept on the outside but just as much on the inside. It offered a full bathroom and kitchen with modern fixtures and appliances, a living room with an adjoining dining area and the ability to use it as a secondary bedroom and a two-person bunk above. The multi-faceted design was kept inside, and it made for a striking visual – and likely gave serious headaches to anyone who needed to fit furniture inside.

Although geared towards affordability, the Mehrzeller was still luxurious. The press release sent out at the time mentioned something about practicality and efficiency on the road but did not go into detail. Renderings showed a large TV screen on the living room wall, and some ability to go out of the network for short intervals was discussed. They also showed an all-white interior with dark wood floors, so maybe this wasn’t meant to be a family RV. The prototype certainly didn’t look very suitable for children or pets.

The Mehrzeller wanted to be the first motorhome to revolutionize the motorhome industry from the Airstream. It didn’t achieve this by not going into production, but it caused some serious waves. Today it’s still a very bold and unique take on the traditional trailer, even if it’s not exactly practical. It would be a way to stand out, that’s for sure.
