The reveal of Hotel Obsidian in The Umbrella Academy Season 3 trailer marks a big departure from the original comics – and not just because of the name.
The Umbrella Academy welcomes you to the Obsidian Hotel, where there’s plenty of room to tweak the original comics. Since The Umbrella Academy Seasons 1 and 2 were both (very) largely based on the corresponding comic book volumes by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, many assumed Season 3 would follow drawing inspiration from the third volume, “Hotel Oblivion”. These suspicions intensified when The Umbrella Academy Season 3 episode titles have been released, and “Oblivion” stood out as one of the most egregious (and thrilling) comic tie-ins.
These Hotel Oblivion theories took an unexpected turn when a series of posters fell in front of the Umbrella Academy Season 3 trailer release. Each poster features a Hargreeves brother carrying a suitcase, and attached to those suitcases are travel stickers for “Hotel Obsidian.” The similarity between Obsidian and Oblivion seemed far too close to be a coincidence, and the reworked moniker immediately hinted at major changes for The Umbrella AcademyThe comic arc of Hotel Oblivion. These changes are now almost confirmed thanks to Netflix The Umbrella Academy trailer for season 3, which teases comedic changes beyond the renamed name.
An exterior shot shows the Obsidian Hotel in all its retro glory for the very first time, the glowing neon sign confirming “Oblivion” has indeed been replaced for live-action purposes. However, the reveal also points to wider changes to Way and Bá’s comic history. In the source material, Hotel Oblivion is a prison built by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, containing all the supervillain enemies his Umbrella Academy has defeated. Although the location is not specified, the Oblivion Hotel is located somewhere in space – a distant planet of cacti and barren desert. The Umbrella Academy The Obsidian Hotel in Season 3 is located directly on a regular city street, busy with cars, pedestrians, and other buildings. The Obsidian Hotel also feels more like a hotel, with the valet parking and neon sign sure to attract regular guests rather than villainous supervillains. Since The Umbrella AcademyThe live-action version of isn’t set in the middle of nowhere, so maybe we can deduce that Hotel Obsidian is do not Reginald’s supervillain prison, but more of an ordinary hotel.
Throwing its weight behind this theory is Five’s fluffy dress. During his dinner conversation with Luther, Klaus, and Diego (the one about what to do if they meet), Five wears a dress emblazoned with the Obsidian Hotel logo. It seems rather unlikely that a supervillain prison would offer spa services.
Hotel Obsidian may not be the same super-prison as Hotel Oblivion in The Umbrella Academyof comics, but several clues point to the building hiding a secret meaning. Atop the Obsidian Hotel is a poster brandishing Sparrow Academy propaganda. Similar signs are dotted elsewhere in The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer, and could prove the Obsidian Hotel is belonging to Sir Reginald. Although the Hotel Oblivion from the comics is home to supervillains, Reginald primarily designed it to trap an interdimensional monster. Perhaps that element of the source material remains intact in the TV version, and whatever the Obsidian Hotel brings, only the Umbrellas and Sparrows whole can stop it.
You also have to wonder why Netflix The Umbrella Academy The TV series would include such an obvious reference to the comics as to slightly alter the name of the hotel. This may be because “Hotel Obsidian” is an ordinary hotel in the Sparrow timeline, but “Hotel Oblivion” is the comic book prison and exists in the Umbrella timeline. That would certainly explain the slightly changed name, but would incorporate comical elements that The Umbrella AcademyThe Season 3 trailer suggests they’re not here.
