With the expansion of production at Paramount +, sleeper success Yellowstone now takes advantage of what inevitably happens with any popular streaming series: a prequel. Paramount + shared the first trailer for 1883, with Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

While Yellowstone revolves around today’s Dutton Ranch family, 1883 traces the lineage of the Dutton family back to their journey west across the Great Plains to the last stronghold of wild America. It is described as a “tale of western expansion” and an in-depth study of a family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land, Montana.

McGraw and Hill lead 1883 as a mother and father determined to bring their son and daughter to a place of endless possibilities. As they cross the rugged border, the unpaved road is strewn with dangerous dead ends and numerous gun shots, most of the chaos spurred on by Sam Elliott’s gruff character.

The series comes from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan, and also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May and LaMonica Garrett. The original series features performances by Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley and Cole Hauser. This year, Yellowstone won an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Production Design for a Contemporary Narrative Program.

1883 premieres exclusively on Paramount + on Sunday, December 19, with a special simulcast premiere event for 1883 aired after the new episode of Yellowstone. So yes, while Yellowstone broadcast on the Paramount network, 1883 will air only on Paramount + as an original series.

However, if you’ve just heard about it and now want to catch up with the entire series before the prequel airs, you’ll have to travel to Peacock to watch the first seasons of Yellowstone. So you only need two streaming subscriptions and cable access to get it all. Yellowstone.
