If Instagram has taught me anything, it’s that people who have vans converted into motorhomes are cooler and happier than me. The proof is in the perfect composition of their photos, from the unwaveringly sunny vistas to their unmistakably genuine smiles. However, in the event of an apocalypse, when even the brightest Insta filter can’t mask the hellish landscape in the background, I suspect the carefree vibes of #vanlife come to a halt. Meanwhile, I’m going to get the hell out of Dodge and seek safety in this military-grade motorhome I found on the Bring a Trailer auction site – which, like Car and driveris part of Hearst Autos.

Sure, this thing looks as inviting as an ice cream truck in the Arctic Circle, but it’s that industrial aesthetic that caught my attention. Is it a truck? Is this a motorhome? On closer inspection, it’s a bit of both. Underneath the RV portion is a medium-duty flatbed truck. Although it features the same platform as the trucks that BAE Systems supplied to the US military, this example is believed to be one of approximately 50 that were sold to civilians under the Titan Trucks brand, apparently disappeared.

According to an old brochure, this “Extreme Duty” 4×4 chassis has a 153.0-inch wheelbase, is 96.0 inches wide, and has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 24,700 pounds. Displacing the 10-plus-ton machine is a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel straight-six, which in stock form is said to produce up to 325 horsepower and 860 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and powers all four wheels. The rear axle also features a locking differential to help in treacherous terrain. The truck rolls on a set of 10-lug wheels wrapped in 395/85R20 Goodyear MV/T tires that are built for combat, and what’s good enough for Uncle Sam is good enough for me.

Obviously, this Frankenstein RV has more than a few cool features. Its roof has been reinforced so that it can be walked on, but most of the real estate above is taken up by a 1200 watt solar panel system. Above the cockpit roof is an aluminum storage bin accessed by ladders on both sides. There are additional storage compartments at the bottom of the campervan as well as two electric retractable awnings, auxiliary LED lighting and even an outdoor shower. The long steel bumper protruding from behind the truck also has an interesting trick; it swivels and is connected to a winch that can lift it for a greater launch angle.

Despite the RV’s military specs, the interior of its aluminum motorhome feels much cozier than an army barracks. It might even be something you’d see in your grandparents’ Winnebago, except it’s much more stylish. There is a queen-size bed and still room for a usable kitchen area and bathroom with shower. A pair of folding bench seats with seat belts face each other in the middle of the motorhome, and when it’s time to eat or, say, play cards, a wooden table slides under the nearby bed frame. If things inside the motorhome get too hot or too cold, there is an air conditioning unit and a diesel heater. If things get too boring, there’s a TV and JL sound system to pump out some tunes. In case one of my passengers and I need space as we try to survive the Apocalypse, the truck cab is separate from the camper. Up front, there’s a set of spare racing seats that look comfortable and supportive. The driving position is perfect for tall cosplay, with dizzying seat height and a comically tall steering wheel. The huge windshield and flat-nose configuration should provide excellent forward visibility. The truck’s abbreviated front overhang should provide terrific approach angles, and in the worst-case scenario of a zombie apocalypse, the steel front bumper will provide an excellent ram.
