The trailer for Varun Tej’s long-delayed boxing drama Ghani (2022), directed by Kiran Korrapati, sees the actor playing a boxer for the first time in his career. It’s also the first time he’s undergone a drastic physical transformation to give his character the desired look.
Varun Tej plays the titular Ghani. The trailer opens with a photo of Ghani’s mother (Nadiya) asking him to promise that he will never take up boxing in his life. Cut to a few shots later, we hear Ghani say that if his mother is to find out that he is boxing behind his back, that should be the day he becomes a national champion.
The rest of the trailer previews the antagonist played by Naveen Chandra. It looks like the movie will pit Varun against Naveen in the ring.
Ghani was financed by Allu Bobby and Sidhu Mudda. The film marks Saiee Manjrekar’s Telugu debut and also stars Suniel Shetty and Upendra.
Speaking of Ghani, Varun had said during a media interaction over a year ago that he would work with a physical trainer from Mumbai to lose weight. “My boxing coach will be flying in from Los Angeles,” he said. “I’ve played different characters so far, but this is the first time I’ll have to physically change into a character.”
