Yelena? New ‘Hawkeye’ trailer may have spoiled a shocking appearance

It can be hard to believe corn Hawk Eye is already half finished. With the final three episodes releasing by Christmas, it’s time for the plot to really kick off, starting with Echo (and possibly Kingpin) coming up for Kate and Clint. As if that weren’t enough, the Black Widow post-credits scene suggests that Florence Pugh’s Yelena could go after Clint as well, believing him to be the person responsible for her sister’s disappearance.

A mysterious character in the mid-season trailer could have missed the biggest reveal of the season. Here is what you need to know.

In the last promo for Hawk Eye, a menacing voice says “The biggest surprises are yet to come” on an episode 3 clip depicting what could very well be Wilson Fisk’s hand. We also see a new clip of a character in what looks like spy gear, including night vision goggles, before Kate reacts with “Who was that?”

This character can be anyone, from Clint and Echo to Kate herself, but the voiceover feels like a character we’ve never seen before. Could this be the look of Yelena that fans have come to expect?

For Marvel Comics fans, the Yelena theory carries even more weight. When Yelena took on the role of Black Widow in the comics, she donned an all-black uniform with a multi-lens spectacle device, taking the spider-like elements of the alter ego to a whole new level. If Yelena is going to take on her sister’s role in the MCU, this costume may be the first glimpse of the new Black Widow.

However, don’t expect to see this in Episode 4. This character didn’t appear in an Episode 4 promo, just a general look at the second half of the season. Stepping away from past trends in the MCU, the most likely moment for an earth-shattering cameo like Yelena is the end of Episode 5, as Contessa Valentina’s appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or Pietro in WandaVision.

But it doesn’t matter if she shows up on December 8 or December 22, Yelena’s appearance will change. Hawk Eye – and the MCU – as we know it. Not only will she and Clint eliminate their respective guilt for losing Natasha, but it will give Kate someone to relate to as the next generation of the Avengers. In fact, we could even see the start of Young Avengers.

Clint and Kate now have three different people after them: Echo (and the tracksuit mafia), Kingpin, and now (hopefully) Yelena. But if there’s one thing the first three episodes proved, it’s that the combined power of the two archers has yet to hit its mark.

Hawk Eye is now streaming on Disney +.
